(See the group Facebook page for many examples.) This is an indication of deep-seated bugs in the software, most likely memory leaks or other memory-related issues. The standard advice is always “restart the computer”. there are many instances where Legacy or some of its features stop working. But there are two other issues that have driven me away from Legacy to RootsMagic: lack of Unicode etc) and great strengths.

The reviews below show that there are tremendous drawbacks to this software (user interface. Legacy Family Tree Review by Michelle Simmons, Synching memories, similar to what Ancestral Quest does would be a major feature that would pull me away from RootsMagic, which does not do that yet.īiggest Pro: Research Guidance, Event and Family View Organization, Source File IDīiggest Con: Lack of serious Sync capabilities with FamilySearch See no reason why that can’t be accomplished as two of the other top Programs, Ancestral Quest and RootsMagic do the same.

It also does not allow sources coming over from FamilySearch to be attached/tagged to events other than Birth, Christening, Death, Burial, Name. As widely as FamilySearch is used and how much, we genealogists, value sources–which we find a lot of from the billions of records on FamilySearch, we still cannot, after years of complaints, successfully synch FamilySearch sources without losing the Source Title coming over from FamilySearch. Would love to give Legacy a 5 as have used it off and on for years and like how it organizes events, has extra research features, BUT it’s communication with FamilySearch sources is severely retarded. My feeling is that Legacy has become very run-down MyHeritage bought it but haven’t increased its resources to the level that gives some certainty that the software will be around in 5 years.īiggest Pro: Makes it almost compulsory to be rigorous about the way data is handled and sourced.īiggest Con: Seemingly near the end of its life. Two weeks is a ridiculous length of time, and even announcements have dried up. I can vividly recall being audited and told that my recovery plan for a 23-server mixed OS network was inadequate because it might take 4 days for the first functionality to be available. But after TWO WEEKS it still isn’t fixed, and so lots of things don’t work right now. If they aren’t fixed it’s because there are too few staff, or the staff don’t try. Maintenance releases have come fewer, and much smaller - and yet there are bugs reported from years ago that are relatively minor and easily fixed. It’s probably a few days work for a decent programmer. No attempt has been made to introduce Unicode support. Mapping needed to be changed because of the way the map provider - Bing - changed. I have abandoned Legacy because this is not the only indication that the developers are either losing interest or totally overwhelmed. It has no unicode support - which is a big problem if any of your ancestors are eastern european, for example. It also has the worst user interface of any program I have used this century.

Many reviews below indicate that Legacy Family Tree is powerful, fosters good practice, has excellent reports and charts. I'd like to be able to keep that information out there without having to attach it to "my tree.Legacy Family Tree Review by Paul Nichols, Is there software out there that can handle "cousinhoods?" (2) I have a habit of collecting bits of information about other families even if they don't have an obvious link to my family.

Can people suggest modern genealogy software that they find useful? I need two features. I think I want to start building files again. It mostly met my needs for keeping my family trees together, though it had an annoying habit of begging me to let it publish my entire family tree. I'd thought Family Tree Maker was fine software. I'd mostly hit a brick wall and life intervened anyway, so I pretty much stopped "doing genealogy" for ten years or so. I had all my files on a standalone laptop and then the machine gave out.

I think I still have all the floppies needed to install Family Tree Maker for Windows 95. I started "doing genealogy" long before I had a personal computer.
